Background

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) works in almost 60 countries to save wildlife and wild places through science, conservation action, education, and inspiring people to value nature. In Indonesia, WCS has been working for over 25 years to support the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in conserving biodiversity in many priority landscapes and seascapes. WCS works closely with relevant government agencies, local communities, schools and universities, and the private sector.

The WCS Indonesia Program (WCS-IP) is structured under five core thematic programs: Forests; Marine; Wildlife Trade and Policy; One Health; and Rights & Communities. This structure reflects the importance of combining our scientific research with broader public awareness and direct engagement with decision-makers. Success will depend on our ability to leverage the interplay between these themes to create larger policy and protection impacts.

Under the Forest Program, WCS-IP works closely with Technical Implementing Units (UPT) at the Directorate General of Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystem to enhance protected area management and wildlife protection through scientific approaches, capacity development, and community engagement. The Forest Program operates in seven Indonesian provinces, using a multilayered approach to carry out five core program activities. These activities include monitoring forests and key species populations, conducting SMART patrols, mitigating human-wildlife conflict, managing and reintroducing species, assisting with protected area management, and promoting sustainable landscapes and infrastructure.

Through the Sustainable Landscape Program, WCS-IP conducts field activities within protected areas and develops new approaches to address other threats to Indonesia's forests. These approaches include the development of conservation enterprises, exploring production/protection partnerships with the private sector to support conservation outcomes, and major multi-partner initiatives that aim to make systemic changes to entire supply chains around protected areas.

The Monitoring and Reporting Specialist will have primary responsibility for assisting the Head of Sustainable Landscape and staff in reporting to donors, tracking grants, developing key communication pieces, and supporting the development of high-quality technical reports.
