Aceh Province northern sea is the best coral reef habitat in western Indonesia. This territory is the gate to Indonesian archipelago, where its biodiversity is the mix between species in Pacific and Indian Ocean. There are at least six endemic species in Weh Island and its surrounding.
Main threat of this area is the unsustainable overfishing activity and cyanide application by the fishermen. Furthermore, the high number of fishing activity using spear gun becomes the main reason of carnivore fish reduction such as grouper and snapper, both in Weh Island or Pulo Aceh (Beras and Nasi Island). The absence of the management on shark utilization also become a special challenge in fisheries management in Aceh Waters.
What we do
WCS-IP started working in Aceh since 2005 through post tsunami 2004 coral reef ecosystem data collection program. In 2007, WCS-IP intensively accompanies Government of Sabang City in managing Weh Island’s natural resources.
The main activity of us here are:
a. Facilitating the reserves of Regional Sea Conservation Area in Sabang City and Great Aceh Regency;
b. Strengthening management institution of Regional Sea Conservation Area in Sabang City and Great Aceh Regency;
c. Implementation of species conservation program (sharks and rays), especially in northern end of Aceh sea and western coast Aceh through coral bleaching research in Weh Island and Pulo Aceh (2010 & 2015).
d. Implementation of ecology survey in Sabang, Great Aceh, Simeulue and Banyak Islands (Aceh Singkil)
Through WCS-IP’s effort to support the local government to increase the effectiveness of northern Aceh sea management, the Eastern Coast of Weh Island appointed as regency sea conservation area. The Sabang City government also achieved some awar regarding to their success in managing the sea and coastal area such as Pesisir Award, the national award for regency who had clear vision on coastal area and sea management and The Best Pilot Sites in E-KKP3K Award.
