Background
The Wildlife Conservation Society Indonesia Program (WCS-IP) contributes substantially to the conservation of biodiversity in Indonesia through landscape-level conservation, support to protected areas (PAs), species conservation actions, and engaging local communities. One of WCS priority landscapes is Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP) in Sumatra. The area surrounding BBSNP in southern Sumatra is one of Indonesia’s principal coffee producing area as well as other valuable commodities. WCS assessment found that expansion of agricultural area, particularly for coffee farm, inside the BBSNP increase the treat to the integrity of park ecosystem and important habitat for key wildlife species.
WCS initiated the establishment of The Bukit Barisan Selatan Sustainable Commodities Partnership (BBS KEKAL), a new and innovative landscape partnership to protect forests and support improved livelihood around the BBSNP. Driven by a unique and pioneering collaboration between local and national government, companies, communities and civil society, BBS KEKAL activities support improvements in the productivity, profitability and resilience of smallholders coffee farmers while stopping deforestation around the park boundaries.
To increase the effectiveness of our conservation interventions and strengthen the role of WCS-IP in Southern Sumatra, and in particular our work in BBSNP, WCS-IP is seeking a Stakeholder Engagement Specialist to lead the engagement with relevant stakeholders along the robusta coffee supply chain in southern Sumatra, which will encourage the stakeholder’s active role in the BBS KEKAL.
Overview
The primary focus of the role is on supporting the development and implementation of Stakeholders Engagement and strengthening to create enabling environments to tackle deforestation and forest conversion pressure from commodities around national Park in Indonesia in general and particularly for Bukit Barisan Selatan landscape.
The role will require close engagement with BBSNP authority, district, provincial (and national) government agencies authority, as well as relevant stakeholder along the robusta coffee supply chain in southern Sumatra. The main objective of this position is to encourage relevant stakeholders to identify and play their respective role and functions in addressing coffee driven deforestation within BBSNP and improving the farmer livelihood in the BBS landscape. Encourage the government create enabling condition to support this effort. Promote sustainably practices in coffee sector in southern Sumatra.
The successful candidate should have demonstrated experience in working on sustainable commodities and working with multi-stakeholders including different level of governments and private sector.
Position Responsibilities:
Analysis and Research
- Coordinate further research on the stakeholders mapping including power dynamic along the robusta coffee supply chain in southern Sumatra and other commodities in WCS priority sites,
- Analyse policy and legal framework in addressing commodity driven deforestation in BBSNP.
Project Development and Management
- Support the design and development of a set of viable interventions particularly related to the stakeholders engagement in addressing commodities driven deforestation in the BBS landscape and working with the team to implement agreed interventions.
- Prepare activity reports as required by WCS, donors and/or stakeholders.
Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
- Support field team to establish and maintain good working relationship with BBSNP authority, district and provincial governments, and relevant stakeholders.
- Linking the community level intervention with the broader local/provincial government development program
- Working closely with the village, district, and provincial governments in the formulation of policy and regulation to incentivize sustainable production of robusta coffee (and other commodities) and disincentivize deforestation within BBSNP
- Establish and maintain good working relationship with local financial institution and local coffee companies to support sustainable production of robusta coffee and addressing commodities driven-deforestation in BBSNP by creating relevant financial tools.
- Provide technical and facilitating support to meetings, seminars, workshops and public outreach activities to present the WCS project to stakeholders.
- Support writing, publishing and presenting high quality research findings on a regular basis through briefing papers, policy papers, technical reports and presentations, and providing data to support WCS’s communication of key findings through websites, social and print media.
Outputs
- Stakeholder mapping including analysis of power dynamic.

- Government development plan which accommodate BBS KEKAL program

Job Requirements
Qualifications and Experience
- Relevant university level qualification in either social-politic, law, agro technology, biology, agriculture, forestry
- Minimum 4 years working in an agricultural company, NGO, or with solid experience working on commodity supply chains
- Demonstrable field experience of working with smallholder farmers, and an understanding of the challenges related to the commodity production in Sumatra.
- Existing relationships and connections with both private and public sector stakeholders in the southern Sumatra region are highly desirable.

- Excellent written and analytical skills.
- Functional fluency in English is desirable.
