General description
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has a distinguished history of exploring and saving wildlife in some of the most remote and wild places on Earth. The Wildlife Conservation Society Indonesia Program (WCS-IP) has grown significantly over the past few decades and contributes to supporting the Government of Indonesia, especially the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF), in conserving Indonesia’s biodiversity. WCS-IP is structured around five core thematic programs: Forests; Marine; Wildlife Trade & Policy; One Health; and Rights & Communities.
In Sumatra, WCS-IP supports the Gunung Leuser National Park Office (BBTNGL) and the ACEH Natural Resources Conservation Office (BKSDA ACEH) and the Aceh Environment and Forestry Service (DLHK Aceh) through KPH VIII and KPH IX in efforts to conserve wildlife habitat and populations within conservation areas and buffer zones. Through one of the main programs, wildlife habitat and population protection patrols and capacity building of UPT staff and partners in operating SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) in the Leuser Landscape.
Currently, WCS IP supports UPT in efforts to protect the habitat and population of predatory animals by operating 17 patrol teams consisting of 8 teams with BBTNGL, 3 teams with BKSDA ACEH (in SM Rawa Singkil), 1 team with KPH VIII and 5 teams with KPH IX Aceh.
In order to achieve the overall goal of protecting wildlife habitat and populations in the Lueser landscape work area, WCS-IP is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Smart Partol Coordinator (1 person), this position will directly report to the Landscape Manager and work closely with other WCS IP staff.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Monitor WCS-IP SMART patrol activities on a monthly basis.
- Supervise all SMART Patrol in Leuser Landscape to ensure compliance with WCS-IP procedures and regulations.
- Recap the monthly patrol plans of all teams, and conduct monitoring and evaluation of the patrol plans prepared by each team.
- Communicate with UPT (BBTNGL, BKSDA Aceh, KPH V III Aceh and KPH IX Aceh) to prepare a strategic plans for area security in each UPT. Ensure patrols are conducted in accordance with the Patrol SOP for each UPT.
- Prepare, implement, and attend meetings related to the discussion of area security patrols.
- Update the SMART internal evaluation schedule and maintain evaluation reports in the CEU data table.
- Improving the capacity of Internal staff, UPT and Partners in understanding SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool).
- Review advance and financial settlement of all smart patrol team activities, managed properly and correctly in accordance with WCS-IP provisions and reported on time.
- Prepare quarterly and annual reports for each UPT and Donor of Smart Patrol activities, and check the completeness of data in CEU database uploaded by SMART Data Operator.
- Update the condition of the patrol team's field equipment periodically and report the results of quarterly equipment checks to the Landscape Manager.
- Supervise KPIs for SMART Patrol Unit Supervisors and Heads of Patrol in each Leuser Landscape area .
- Implement strategy analysis patrol based on previous data carried out by the team patrol WCS IP support in Leuser Landscape
- Prepare routine patrol grid maps for the Leuser landscape area in collaboration with TNGL, BKSDA Aceh and KPH VIII and KPH IX Aceh
- Supports Landscape Manager in preparing data and information related to SMART Patrol, both for reporting and other strategic needs
Coordination:
- Coordinate with other Supervisors on every policy/responsibility when carrying out patrol activities in the Leuser Landscape. The policies include recommending patrol routes, identifying potential threats, and developing patrol strategies to reduce habitat and wildlife threats as part of the Integrated Prevention Model (IPM) support, ensuring that activities are interconnected with other units such as HWCM, WTP, and monitoring.
- Coordinating with UPT (BBTNGL, BKSDA Aceh, KPH Aceh, Forestry Service and others) in order to strengthen policies and increase capacity in efforts to protect conservation areas and buffer areas.
- Delivering the latest developments both in writing and verbally regarding patrol activities to the Landscape Manager.
- Conducting an evaluation of the results of patrol activities in the Leuser Landscape together with the conservation area managers (related UPT parties).
Other tasks:
- Collaborate and coordinate with other teams within WCS-IP.
- Willing to travel to any WCS-IP work area during the contract period.
- Willing to participate in capacity building training and other WCS-IP activities assigned by WCS-IP.
- Willing to attend seminars, meetings and workshops assigned by WCS-IP .
- Maintain good relations with all WCS IP staff and conservation area management staff (related UPT) and partners.
Qualifications :
- Educational background minimum Bachelor's degree in Conservation Program (Forestry, Biology, Geography, etc)
- Preference will be given to individuals who have the ability to operate Argis and SMART (Spatial Monitoring and reporting Tool) .
- Able to communicate effectively and collaborate with various stakeholders
- Able to coordinate a team
- Have at least 5 years of experience in the conservation field
- Priority will be given to candidates from North Sumatra and Aceh
