BACKGROUND:

The Wildlife Conservation Society is an international organization engaged in wildlife conservation. The Wildlife Conservation Society – Indonesia Program (WCS-IP) began working in Indonesia in 1965 and established a formal country program in 1991. Using a “muddy boots” method to conservation, we identify critical conservation issues, find science-based solutions to these problems, and achieve tangible, on-the-ground success that benefits wildlife and wild places.

The WCS Indonesia Marine Program focuses on started and has been working with government and community partners to develop networks of marine protected areas and sustainable fisheries in Indonesia. WCS is committed to assisting the Government of Indonesia to meet its national and international commitments to MPA establishment and management – including the commitment to achieve 20 million hectares of MPAs by 2020. MPAs benefit both biodiversity and fisheries management by protecting habitats and protecting breeding populations of important marine organisms.

Within Marine Program, WCS focuses on site-level conservation in Aceh, Java, West Nusa Tenggara North Sulawesi, and North Maluku. WCS also has activities in national level to support national government in marine protected area management, species conservation, and sustainable fisheries.

In order to strengthen our conservation programs, WCS-IP is employing geographic information system (GIS) approach in designing our conservation plans and actions, including communicating our strategies to partners. The GIS Senior Officer is required to maintain a comprehensive spatial database for WCS Marine sites and to provide technical assistance on GIS and remote-sensing to Marine Bogor staffs, field staffs, local government partners, and undertake spatial analyses, such as identifying key conservation area, marine and coastal spatial planning, species conservation, and sustainable fisheries. The GIS Senior Officer will assist WCS Indonesia Marine Program in collection, storage, analysis, mapping, imaging, and communication of geospatial information.

Tasks:

The position will directly report to Marine Science Unit Manager and work with Senior Program Manager, Technical Marine Advisor, Specialists and other staffs to:

  1. Provide GIS analysis and spatial data management.
  2. Develop database management, and provide analysis of spatial data for survey, reports and publications.
  3. Training and technical assistance in GIS analysis
  4. Provide activity reports for Science Team
  5. Contribute to writing and publishing of technical reports and peer reviewed publications.

ROLES:

  1. To participate in all aspects of field-work and data assimilation as required by any team member;
  2. To work closely together with senior scientists and the Marine Indonesia project managers in preparation of reports and publications development;
  3. Contribute to process of development of MPA zonation, management plan and sustainable fisheries management plan;
  4. Participate in internal and external meetings as required;
  5. Participate in data analysis, interpretation, and report writing if required;
  6. Participate and prepare budget reports as required;
  7. Provide training and technical assistance to team members and potential partners in WCS Indonesia Marine sites to ensure that spatial analysis becomes part of the program analysis in implementing activities;
  8. At all times have considerate, generous, and helpful approach with all team members.

Field Work: general

  1. Ensure the efficient and effective preparation of equipment;
  2. Ensure comprehensive data collection during field surveys to meet all required specifications;
  3. Work closely with the Chief Scientist in analyzing spatial data and assisting with report writing at the end of each data collection cycle (approximately one month).

Reports and Deliverables:

The employee will provide to the Marine Program Manager the following material on the following schedule :

  1. Daily activity reports (verbal) or as requested;
  2. Weekly activity reports for Science Team;
  3. Semestrial activity reports for Science Team;
  4. Annual team and personal work plan;
  5. Semi-annually and annual general activity reports;
  6. Computer files and directories that summarize the office activity and correspondence (backed up on monthly basis);

The candidates must fulfill with the requirements as below:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geographic Science or another relevant science-related field
  • Experience in managing GIS projects and collaborating with other professionals, having basic knowledge of Marine Science will be preferred
  • Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar tools, including Marxan
  • Ability to manage and analyze spatial and non-spatial data, including creating and maintaining GIS databases;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a similar position with an NGO/INGO or Private Sector
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, enjoys challenges and can adapt to various situations while prioritizing multiple work assignments simultaneously.
  • Well- organized, attention to detail and have great time management skills.
  • Fluent in written and spoken in English.
  • Additional points: Samples of GIS products or a portfolio of previous work.
